Course gathers Amazon specialists to promote participatory and sustainable management of fishery resources

The government of Rondônia is participating in the Course for Multipliers in Shared Management of Fishery Resources, focusing on the participatory management of the invasive pirarucu species, from July 15 to 25. This training is held at the Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve in Tefé, Amazonas, aimed at equipping technicians and managers to serve as facilitators. The initiative, supported by a natural resource management institution, brings together experts, managers, and conservation unit representatives from various states within the Legal Amazon.

Representatives from the Rondônia State Department of Environmental Development (Sedam) play a crucial role, especially given the challenges in the Rio Cautário Extractive Reserve in Costa Marques. The presence of pirarucu (Arapaima gigas) outside its natural habitat has caused significant ecological impacts, disrupting the equilibrium and livelihoods of local extractive communities.

Since 2022, Sedam has been implementing the Pirarucu Control Management Plan in the Rio Cautário Extractive Reserve, successfully capturing over 630 invasive specimens. In 2023, this effort expanded with a pilot project launched in the Pedras Negras community, inspired by the successful model applied in the Rio Cautário Reserve.

Governor Marcos Rocha noted that this gathering promotes the conservation of natural resources by training public servants and traditional communities. “By supporting initiatives like this, we enhance the integrated management of Conservation Units and advocate for sustainable development, ensuring future generations can benefit from our rivers and their biodiversity. The exchange of experiences among participants underscores the event’s significance, likely leading to even more effective solutions for environmental challenges,” he emphasized.

Technical training enhances strategies for controlling pirarucu in Conservation Units

Chirlaine Varão, Sedam’s management coordinator, expressed optimism that insights gained from the course will refine control and prevention strategies in Rondônia. “Beyond technical knowledge, the course represents a vital step in developing participatory solutions that prioritize dialogue with traditional communities and enhance shared management in Conservation Units. The sharing of experiences and knowledge is essential for addressing the impacts of invasive species and ensuring the preservation of Amazon ecosystems, consistently aligned with sustainable development principles,” she stated.

Marco Antônio Lagos, Secretary of Sedam, emphasized the significance of this training in reinforcing shared management and valuing local knowledge. “This course marks a pivotal point in the strategy for controlling the invasive pirarucu in Rondônia. Since 2022, we have made substantial progress with the Pirarucu Control Management Plan in the Rio Cautário Extractive Reserve, and now we aim to further enhance our monitoring and capture techniques. We are confident that this collective learning will lead to more effective actions that safeguard our ecosystems and ensure the sustainability of fishery resources throughout the state.”
