On Wednesday, July 30th, at 7 PM, the Public Ministry of Rondônia (MPRO) will host the launch event for the 14th edition of the MPRO Journalism Award. The ceremony will take place in the auditorium of the institution’s headquarters in Porto Velho, featuring a thematic panel and the presentation of improvements made to this year’s rules and registration process, making it quicker and more dynamic.
This year’s theme is “Public Ministry of Rondônia in Defense of Society’s Rights in the Amazon,” addressing urgent climatic issues affecting both local and global contexts, which have significant impacts on various communities.
The MPRO is committed to protecting the bioma and its inhabitants, a mission complemented by journalistic efforts, as noted by the Attorney General Alexandre Jésus de Queiroz Santiago. “Free access to information is one of the fundamental pillars of a democratic state. Information is a right. Defending this right is part of our mission. Hence, we recognize journalism’s power to transform realities and support initiatives like this to enhance professional practice,” he stated.
Panel Discussion and Guests
The launch event will feature a panel titled “Amazon: Populations, Territories, Citizenship, and the Public Ministry.” Among the speakers will be Marcelo Ferronato, President of Ecoporé, and Ivanildo de Oliveira, Deputy Attorney General of the MPRO, discussing the MPRO’s relationship with the rights of Amazon communities. The event is open to the public, and those wishing to obtain a certificate must register for the panel via the MPRO School website by July 28th.
Panel Theme
Oliveira will focus on constitutional responsibilities in environmental defense, covering emblematic cases and best practices for protecting the Amazon, as well as the strategic and institutional challenges. Ferronato will highlight the realities facing the Amazon in Rondônia, including pressures from deforestation in conservation areas, wildfires, and last year’s climate crisis, alongside Ecoporé’s efforts in cooperation with the Public Ministry.
14th Edition of the Award
Under the theme “Public Ministry in Defense of Society’s Rights in the Amazon,” this contest honors journalistic works that advocate for citizenship and fundamental rights through information dissemination.
According to Attorney General Alexandre Jésus de Queiroz Santiago, the award is set to evolve by 2025 with significant innovations, including a more accessible and intuitive website. “Now, everything is automated: registration, judging, and ranking, with enhancements in speed and transparency throughout the process,” he explained, outlining some of the updates that will be revealed during the launch event.
With a total prize amount of R$ 75,000, the competition will award winners across four categories: Web Journalism, TV Journalism, Cinematography, and Academic Highlight.
