Family of the victim with the Prosecutor

On Wednesday (April 30), the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Rondônia (MPRO) secured a 31-year prison sentence for J.R. for the feminicide of his wife, Kátia Dias de Oliveira, 43, and mother of three. The crime took place in January 2024 in the rural area of Jaru. The trial was held at the local Jury Court, drawing significant public emotion and a crowded courtroom.

Brutal Crime

The MPRO presented the case as feminicide, highlighting that the woman was killed due to her gender. The jury acknowledged four aggravating factors: a trivial motive, cruel means, a method that prevented the victim’s defense, and the nature of gender-based violence. Additionally, the defendant received an extra year in prison for attempting to conceal the victim’s body after the crime.

MPRO’s Involvement

The prosecution was led by Prosecutor Victor Ramalho Monfredinho. During the trial, he provided evidence detailing Kátia’s history of abuse and the brutality of her murder. He also emphasized that the accused was already under a protective measure as stipulated by the Maria da Penha Law, underscoring the pattern of violence.

Community Engagement

The trial drew significant attention from the local community, with many attending to witness the proceedings. The public’s presence reflected the crime’s impact on the city and a collective desire for justice. The jury, made up of seven citizens, fully embraced the MPRO’s argument and imposed the maximum sentence allowable for the case.

Commitment to Life

This case highlights the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Rondônia’s dedication to protecting life and combating violence against women. Feminicide represents the most extreme form of gender violence and constitutes a serious violation of human rights. The MPRO is committed to holding perpetrators accountable and safeguarding victims, employing all available legal tools.
