To promote and enhance Indigenous craftsmanship while preserving ancestral knowledge, the National Foundation for Indigenous Peoples (Funai) provided logistical support to ensure Indigenous participation in the 4th Municipal Coffee and Cocoa Week (4th CAFECAU). Hosted by the Cacoal City Hall in Rondônia, the event took place from July 4 to 6.
Twelve Indigenous representatives from the Paiter Suruí, Cinta Larga, Kwazá, Aikanã, and Sakurabiat tribes showcased their crafts during the market. “Participating in the 4th CAFECAU not only generates income through the sale of crafts but also promotes the recognition of their products and efforts. This contribution enriches local culture. Funai’s goal is to encourage and support Indigenous presence, particularly focusing on empowering Indigenous women,” said Rubens Suruí, regional coordinator of Funai in Cacoal.
Funai facilitated meals and accommodations for participants throughout the three-day event and managed transportation logistics for the Indigenous artisans and their crafts. Tables and chairs were also provided for displaying and selling their items.
This initiative was spearheaded by the Regional Coordination of Funai in Cacoal (CR-CAC) with assistance from the General Coordination of Ethnodevelopment Promotion (CGEtno), under the Sustainable Development Promotion Directorate (DPDS), which works to strengthen the productive chains of various Indigenous groups across the country.
This marks the second occasion the CR-CAC has enabled Indigenous participation in the Municipal Coffee and Cocoa Week, highlighting the event’s importance in bringing together individuals from different municipalities and promoting Indigenous crafts. The first participation occurred during the third edition in 2024.
The Regional Coordination is committed to continuously supporting Indigenous artisans by providing necessary tools, materials, and supplies for their craft production and enhancement.
