This Saturday morning (21), residents of Campo Novo de Rondônia (RO) experienced an uncomfortable situation at the municipal cemetery. Videos circulating on social media show family and friends digging and enlarging a grave to accommodate a burial.
According to a family member who spoke to the Gazeta Rondônia, upon arriving at the cemetery for the burial of Mr. Ailton Nascimento, 60, who passed away at home from natural causes, they found the grave unsuitable for the size of the coffin.
“The coffin was longer than the grave, and the depth was also inadequate. It’s very sad for the family to go through such embarrassment during this painful time,” said the relative.

In the footage, several individuals, including a local councilman who is a friend of the deceased’s family, are seen digging the grave. According to IBGE data, the estimated population of Campo Novo de Rondônia is approximately 8,844 inhabitants, indicative of a small town.
The Gazeta Rondônia contacted Mayor Alexandre Dias (União Brasil) via phone, who provided an explanation for the incident.
“I am currently outside the municipality. The grave was dug with a backhoe from the Public Works Department to standard specifications, and neither the funeral home nor family members requested different measurements. There were also staff available at the site to provide necessary support,” explained the mayor.
