On June 12, the Tribunal de Justiça de Rondônia (TJRO) attended the 2nd Meeting of the Permanent Centers for Consensual Conflict Resolution Methods (Nupemecs) in the Southeastern Region, held in São Paulo. This event brought together judges and representatives from various courts in the region to discuss advancements, challenges, and best practices in the use of self-composition methods within the Brazilian judiciary.
The TJRO was represented by Desembargador José Antonio Robles, who presides over the Tribunal’s Nupemec. He engaged in discussions and shared successful experiences with other regional coordinators regarding mediation and conciliation initiatives.
During the meeting, Robles emphasized the significance of national collaboration facilitated by Fonamec and the essential role of Nupemecs in enhancing access to justice. “Implementing pre-litigation conciliation, including within the judicial process itself, is not only less burdensome for the Judiciary but also enhances its credibility. For instance, there are currently over 76 million people with negative credit listings due to issues like functional illiteracy. Seeing these individuals frequently facing legal action incurs excessive costs that could be reallocated to other public administration sectors. As judges, we must remain vigilant about these matters,” Robles stated.
The event included roundtable discussions and presentations on ongoing projects in Southeast courts, covering topics such as over-indebtedness, family mediation, technological innovations in consensual methods, citizenship, and access to justice for indigenous peoples.
TJRO’s involvement in this meeting underscores the Tribunal’s commitment to establishing conciliation practices as a means to provide quicker, more effective, and more humane conflict resolution. The event was organized by the National Forum for Mediation and Conciliation (Fonamec).
