Since launching the task force against the fake lawyer scam, OAB Rondônia has recorded over 270 formal complaints statewide. This initiative reflects a collaborative effort between the Section and the community to combat the fraudulent use of lawyers’ identities and information.

Typically, this scam involves con artists contacting victims via phone or messaging apps, impersonating legal professionals to illicitly obtain bank transfers, often through Pix.

To assist those affected by financial losses due to such scams, OAB Rondônia highlights a vital tool from the Central Bank: the Special Return Mechanism (MED). The MED allows victims of fraud to request the return of funds transferred via Pix from financial institutions.

The process adheres to the regulations established by the Banking Self-Regulation System (SARB), particularly norm nº 27/2023, which outlines best practices for using Pix and mandates that banks implement preventive measures and rapid responses to fraud.
