During a public hearing held by the Senate Committee on Infrastructure, led by Senator Marcos Rogério, Deputy Cirone Deiró reiterated his calls for the duplication of BR-364 and criticized its privatization model, which includes seven toll plazas without ensuring meaningful improvements for the community. The discussion, initiated by Senators Marcos Rogério and Jaime Bagattoli, brought together Rondônia’s federal delegation, representatives from ANTT, the Ministry of Transport, and civil society at the Vilhena City Council.
Cirone Deiró recalled that in 2022, he pointed out the lack of transparency in the road’s concession process. “The federal government misled the people of Rondônia by failing to include the duplication in the project, focusing solely on toll collection,” he stated. He also emphasized the need for rest areas for truck drivers and warned that BR-364—the only route for agricultural production in Rondônia and Mato Grosso—would not see any infrastructure upgrades. He cited the bridges built in the 1980s, which are in urgent need of maintenance as many are already compromised. Additionally, he raised the issue of constructing bypasses in cities where BR-364 runs through urban centers.
Dilcionir Panatto, representing Crea, mentioned that the privatization model of BR-364 is being legally challenged by the organization for reversing the investment priorities. “Tolls will be charged first, and only then will minimal investments be made, with duplication limited to just 113 km of critical sections,” he remarked. Marcos Biazzi from the Vilhena Commercial Association cautioned that toll costs will be passed onto consumers, raising the cost of living in the state.
Luiz Felipe Marchesini Muller, president of the Rondônia Cargo Transport Union, highlighted that a truck making the round trip from Vilhena to Porto Velho will incur R$2,000 in tolls. “These costs are incompatible with the state’s reality, which is already burdened by high fuel prices,” he said, urging the federal delegation to ensure the duplication and other infrastructure investments.
At the conclusion of the hearing, Cirone Deiró expressed optimism regarding Senator Marcos Rogério’s statement that the contract has not yet been signed and that the Infrastructure Committee and federal delegation would strive to include favorable clauses for the residents of Rondônia. “Duplicating the 500 km is crucial to reduce the over 1,400 accidents recorded in 2024, resulting in numerous fatalities,” he emphasized, stating that the Senate hearing underscored the urgency for a model that prioritizes driver safety and the economic development of Rondônia.
